Butterfly – Production Guide

The information provided in this brief should not be interpreted as strict rules, but rather as creative guidelines to support the overall direction.

a view on the concept

lofi

compilation

Butterfly is a sleepy lofi compilation that explores the idea of continuity beyond death … not as an ending, but as a subtle transformation into another form of life.

The sound should reflect transition rather than absence:
calm, organic, slightly unreal … as if reality is dissolving, but never fully gone.

RHYTHM

Slow BPM, we recommend somewhere between 50–70 BPM.
Rhythmic elements should be subtle and non-dominant
Avoid groove-driven structure

drums

Minimal
Use soft, textural percussion (foley, filtered noise, organic)
It’s important to incorporate organic sounds into the drum pattern and try to use organic textures for different elements..such as the hi-hat, so they maintain a similar frequency range.

low end

Warm, restrained sub-bass
Low-passed and smoothly sustained
Should support the atmosphere without introducing hard movement or bounce. Use subtle slides between bass notes to create a smooth, natural sense of movement.

melody

Well anything, just keep it reaaaaaally soft and simple
Minimal melodic leads along organic and textural sounds
Introduce really, ok really subtle imperfections (tape, modulation, noise). Try to make them unique, don’t use a simple vinyl sound

structure

Gradual development over time
Minimal transitions; changes should feel natural and unforced

Use subtle tonal elements (e.g. soft laser-like textures), but keep them low in the mix
Apply diffused reverbs with a controlled low-end (avoid muddiness or excessive sub buildup)
Incorporate organic field textures such as wind, foliage, and distant wildlife
Add water elements (droplets, gentle flow, distant reflections)
Introduce fine spatial movement (stereo shifts, filtered modulation), but keep it restrained
In essence, add low-level details that enhance the experience over time, without becoming focal points.

more about the sound

artistic direction

Aim for a deep sense of calm and introspection
Maintain a light melancholic tone, without heaviness
Convey a feeling of acceptance and continuity
Avoid elements that immediately draw attention or dominate the mix
No dramatic contrasts or emotional peaks
Keep the overall flow linear and consistent
